COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Nationally Board Certified and Licensed Chiropractic Physician, SOMI Certified Medical Massage Practitioner, and Licensed Massage Therapist, Dr. Jeff Cullers of Premier Continuing Education will present this course in oncology massage.
This course consists of a 4-hour online home study course and a 2 DAY live course and is intended to teach Massage Therapists about the many facets of oncology massage. In this course, Massage Therapists’ will learn how to properly utilize an oncology intake form, how to recommend an oncology massage treatment plan, as well as how to implement a variety of oncology massage techniques including but not limited to, lymphatic drainage massage, therapeutic Swedish massage, gentle stretching techniques and more. Massage Therapists’ will learn how to provide safe and effective oncology massage to those clients who:
- has recently been diagnosed with cancer and have not started anti-cancer treatment
- is in active treatment
- has a history of cancer
- has had lymph nodes removed
- has not had lymph nodes removed
- has been successfully treated
COURSE CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS:
TOTAL of 20 NCBTMB Approved CEs consisting of, a 4-hour online home study course and a 16 CE Hands-on course.
4 HOUR ONLINE HOME STUDY COURSE:
In the 4-hour online oncology massage course, Massage Therapists’ will learn to develop:
- an understanding of the history of cancer
- an understanding of current statistical data related to cancer
- an understanding of the medical terminology related to cancer
- an understanding of what oncology massage is
- an understanding of what cancer is and its stages of development
- an understanding of types of cancer pain & how cancer metastasizes
- an understanding of cancer fatigue
- an understanding of cancer treatments
- an understanding of the effects of chemotherapy treatments and side effects
- an understanding of the effects of chemo brain and CIPN side effects
- an understanding of the effects of radiation therapy treatments and side effects
- an understanding of deep vein thrombosis risk factors & cancer
- an understanding of the physiological effects of lymphatic drainage massage and cancer
- an understanding of the anatomical features and terminology of the functional lymphatic system
- an understanding of the precautions related to other oncology massage techniques
- an understanding of potential modifications of oncology massage
Please Note: The online home study course and successful passing of examination must be completed prior to attending the 2 DAY live course. All Massage Therapists’ will be required to provide proof of completion of the online course. If a Massage Therapist does not provide proof of completion and successful passing of the online course, they will not be permitted to attend the 2 DAY live course.
16-HOUR -2 DAY LIVE COURSE:
In this 16-hour course, Massage Therapists’ will learn to develop:
- an understanding of how to effectively interview an oncology client using the Oncology Massage Intake Form
- an understanding of how to communicate an appropriate oncology massage service/care plan
- an understanding of assessment techniques for oncology massage
- an understanding of what lymphodynamic edema is & causes
- an understanding of what lymphostatic edema is & causes
- an understanding of the indications & contraindications of lymphatic drainage massage
- an understanding of how to perform techniques consistent with proper Vodder-style lymphatic drainage massage for an intact lymphatic system of the head
- an understanding of how to perform techniques consistent with proper Vodder-style lymphatic drainage massage for an intact lymphatic system of the neck
- an understanding of how to perform techniques consistent with proper Vodder-style lymphatic drainage massage for an intact lymphatic system of the face
- an understanding of how to perform techniques consistent with proper Vodder-style lymphatic drainage massage for an altered (lymph node removal) lymphatic system of the arms
- an understanding of how to perform techniques consistent with proper Vodder-style lymphatic drainage massage for an altered (lymph node removal) lymphatic system of the legs
- an understanding of how to effectively use safe varieties of effleurage massage techniques
- an understanding of how to use superficial friction on fingers and toes
- an understanding of how to use acupressure points to control symptoms related to cancer and/or treatment side effects
- an understanding of how to effectively use safe varieties of kneading massage techniques
- an understanding of how to effectively use gentle passive stretching techniques
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
- Writing utensil & paper to take notes
- Massage Table, linens, and massage lotion/oil/cream (If you are attending with another MT, 1 table is recommended for 2 people)
- Snacks and Non-Alcoholic Beverages
- Wear loose comfortable clothing such as yoga or fitness attire
- You must attend the Hands-On training
NOTE: If you do not have a massage table or choose not to participate in the hands-on techniques presented, you may observe.
